Art & Design
At the Orchard we teach Art & Design so that our pupils:
- become confident, creative artists.
- develop knowledge about art and artists which is linked to knowledge in other areas of their learning and helps to build a fuller understanding of art and artists within society, within history and how art can enrich our lives
- take creative risks and express their individuality.
- experience working with and gain knowledge of a wide range of materials, in both 2D and 3D form.
- enjoy expressing themselves in a creative and imaginative way whilst developing their artistic skills.
- become increasingly proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
- evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.

Art & Design in Reception
In the Revised Early Years Foundation Stage, art is found in the Expressive Arts and Design area of the Foundation Stage Curriculum and is broken down into two aspects:
- Exploring and Using Media and Materials
- Being Imaginative
Exploring and Using Media and Materials
This is about how children experiment with media and materials finding out about their properties and modifying and manipulating them. It includes exploring sounds, patterns, movement and different tools and techniques.
Being Imaginative
This is about children’s explorations into the world of pretence, building on their experiences of the real world and transforming them into something new – whether through role play, music, pretend play, block play or small world play or a range of other areas.
Artist of the Month
Our Reception children are exposed to the artwork of a different artist each month who is linked to our Key Stage 1 Art curriculum.
In the month of October, children are introduced to abstract artist Alma Thomas.
Year 2 also study Alma's paintings in their art lessons.
